Habit of Reading

Raghu, Ravi, Akila and Praveena gathered together after a fortnight. “Hi guys! How was your vocation?” asked Raghu. Ravi started, “Actually all we three planned to develop the habit of reading in this free span. But….” dragged a bit and continued, “ but I was unable to succeed sir. First day I was able to read atleast an hour. Next day, a half hour and the third day….” “What about you?” looking at the ladies, Raghu asked. “Ditto sir” said in chorus both Akila and Praveena. “Why..? What happened..? What made you to give up..?’’ enquired Raghu.

இரு வார விடுமுறைக்குப் பின் கூடினர். ‘‘ம்… எப்படி இருந்தது இந்த விடுமுறை?” ரகு கேட்டார். ‘‘உண்மையிலேயே, இந்த விடுமுறையில் படிக்கும் பழக்கத்தைப் பண்
படுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என நாங்கள் மூவரும் திட்டமிட்டோம். ஆனா…”என சற்று இழுத்தபடியே தொடர்ந்தான் ரவி, ‘‘ஆனா முடியல சார். முதல் நாள் குறைஞ்சபட்சம் ஒரு மணி நேரமாவது படிக்க முடிஞ்சது. இரண்டாவது நாள் அரை மணி நேரம். மூன்றாவது நாள் அதுவுமில்லை.” பெண்கள் பக்கம் திரும்பி கேட்டார், ”நீங்க என்ன செஞ்சீங்க?”, ‘‘அதேதான் சார்”இருவரும் கோரஸாக சொன்னார்கள்.

உடனே,  ‘‘ஏன்? என்னாச்சு? விடற அளவுக்கு அப்படி என்னதான் ஆச்சு?” என்றார் ரகு. “The first day, when I started reading, in each and every line, there was at least one new word to which I did not know the meaning. So I kept a dictionary with me and started referring to, meaning for each and every unknown words. It almost took an hour to finish just three pages. The next day, happened the same. The third day, I was little fed up because, I was not able to finish an eight  page story in three days. I felt mentally tired and gave up sir” explained Ravi. “And, did you too came across the same experience, ladies?” asked Raghu. “Ditto sir” said aloud the ladies.

“முதல் நாள், படிக்க ஆரம்பிச்சப்போ ஏறக்குறைய ஒவ்வொரு வரியிலும் குறைந்தபட்சம் எனக்கு பொருள் தெரியாத ஒன்றுக்கு மேற்பட்ட வார்த்தைகள் இருந்தன. உடனே ஒரு அகராதியை எடுத்துக்கிட்டு ஒவ்வொரு வார்த்தைக்கும் பொருளை குறித்தவாறே படிக்க ஆரம்பிச்சேன் சார். ஒரு மூன்று பக்கங்களை முடிக்கறதுக்கு ஒரு மணி நேரம் ஆயிடுச்சு சார். இரண்டாவது நாளும் அதே கதைதான் சார். மூன்றாவது நாள்… சொல்லவே வேணாம். மூணு நாளாகியும் ஒரு எட்டு பக்கக் கதையைக் கூட படிக்க முடியலயேன்னு வெறுத்து போச்சுங்க சார். அதனால விட்டுட்டேன்” என்றான் ரவி.

பெண்களின் பக்கம் பார்த்த ரகு, ‘‘உங்களுக்கு அதே அனுபவம்தானா?” எனக் கேட்கும் முன்னரே ”ஆமாங்க சார். அதேதான் சார்”என்றனர் மீண்டும் கோரஸாக.
